Member of the Week - Alzheimer Scotland

Alzheimer Scotland is Scotland’s leading specialist dementia charity and works to improve the lives of everyone affected by dementia. An estimated 90,000 people are living with dementia in Scotland, with over 4,600 of those living in the Highland area.

Alzheimer Scotland – Action on Dementia was established in 1994 and is supported by Over 500 members of staff and over 800 volunteers!

We spoke to community fundraiser, Elma Mackay, who has been with the organisation for four years and has extensive experience in the charity environment having worked for two charity organisations previously. We asked Elma why she would like Alzheimer Scotland to feature as member of the week; Elma would like to raise awareness of the charity and how people can support them.

If you would like to get involved in supporting Alzheimer Scotland, they have some events coming up such as Christmas Afternoon Tea at the Mercure Hotel on 2nd December and the Carolthon on 16th December for which Alzheimer Scotland is Charity of the Year. Elma also wants to spread the word that you can hold your own event or fundraising group this Christmas to support this charity to raise funds and awareness.

Over the next 12 months, Alzheimer Scotland will continue to raise as much needed funds for people living with dementia in the Highlands by holding events such as a Ladies Lunch, Ball, It’s a Knockout and Memory Walk.

World-wide recognition was received by Tesco, Forres, for their slow lane checkout which Alzheimer Scotland were instrumental in supporting. Elma said: “As many of their customers are older, the idea came because of issues older people may have when shopping”.

We asked Elma what she values most about membership with Inverness Chamber of Commerce: “Networking, get along to as many events as you can – networking lunches, speed networking and many more”.

If you have contacts, event experience, or just want to give back to your local community, Alzheimer Scotland are looking to set up fundraising groups across the North of Scotland to help organise events, from Balls to coffee mornings, organise collection cans and cheque presentations, and generally to be a support to the Community Fundraiser in their local area- Highland, Moray and Aberdeenshire.

Some of the upcoming events can be seen below:

Saturday 2nd December

Afternoon Tea, Mercure Hotel 1 – 3:30pm

You’ve trailed round the shops, your feet are killing you and all you need is a seat and a nice cup of tea. Well on 2nd December, let Alzheimer Scotland help you.  Come along to Afternoon Tea at the Mercure Hotel.  For only £15 per person you’ll be able to take the weight of your feet and enjoy some lovely refreshments to give you more energy for the next stint.  All the while, you are also supporting people living with dementia in Highland. They are also looking for a few craft stalls!

Saturday 16th December

Carolthon, Eastgate Shopping Centre – 10:30 am – 4:30 pm

Alzheimer Scotland are delighted to have been chosen for this year’s Carolthon. It is making us all here in the office feel very warm and Christmassy.  They are looking for volunteers to help collect on the day.  What better way to get into the Christmas Spirit!

It is Alzheimer Scotland’s aim to ensure nobody faces dementia alone. Contact Elma on emackay@alzscot.org, or 07796 673130 for more information on these events or for a no obligation, information sharing chat as to how you can help.
