Member of the Week - Brodies LLP

Brodies LLP is Scotland’s leading law firm, measured by income, directory rankings and lawyer numbers. It’s also one of the oldest, with roots dating back nearly 300 years to the time of the Scottish Enlightenment. Brodies is a full service law firm which advises on all areas of the law for clients, from personal and family matters through to real estate, corporate and commercial work, litigation and banking & finance. Its first Highlands office was set up in 2018 in Dingwall and the firm also has offices in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Brussels.  Brodies currently has 700+ colleagues which includes over 100 partners, and the firm is still growing.

Inverness Chamber of Commerce spoke to Karen Sutherland, associate in Brodies' Dingwall office: “I joined Brodies' Land & Rural Business team as a solicitor in 2014, I initially worked in the Glasgow office before I moved back to the Highlands where I grew up, to work remotely. After a year of working from home, Brodies opened its Dingwall office where I am now based. I advise on a range of rural property matters including the acquisition and sale of land, farms, estates, crofts, forestry, salmon fishing and residential properties. I also undertake agricultural, telecommunication and residential leasing work and deal with clawback agreements, securities and servitudes for various purposes and different utilities. Growing up on my family’s farm gave me a lot of insight into the practical issues faced by rural businesses and I find that knowledge and experience to be really valuable when working with clients.”

Brodies recently launched its new health and safety app – Health and Safety by Brodies - to guide businesses and individuals through the process of responding to an incident. The app features easy-to-use checklists, legal updates and handy guides to support users in the initial response stages. It’s particularly useful for businesses working in sectors that are more prone to risk, such as construction and agriculture. Access or download at

Karen shared Brodies' business plans for the next 12 months: “One of our core values at Brodies is care, so wellbeing is central to all that we do. This applies to our colleagues, helping them to feel happy, healthy and supported - and also in our approach to working with clients and the wider community, so this will very much play a key role in the business plans for the year ahead. We’re also continuing to grow the firm and hire more talented people to join the business – both in Dingwall and across our other offices – in legal and business service roles.”

Brodies has won some fantastic awards, Karen told us more: “In the last 12 months we’ve been named Scotland Law Firm of the Year at the Who’s Who Legal Awards for the eighth consecutive year; Legal Advisor of the Year at Scottish Business Insider’s Deals and Dealmakers Awards; The Law Awards of Scotland Innovation Awards for Workbox by Brodies, our online HR product; Legal Team of the Year at the Scottish Property Awards and Scotland’s Trade Mark Contentious Firm of the Year at the Managing IP Awards.”

We asked Karen what Brodies LLP values most about its Inverness Chamber membership: “The opportunities it presents to network with other businesses in the community and the platform it provides to tell others about the work we do.”

Karen shared her top-tip for other chamber members to get the most out of their membership: “Sign up to the fortnightly news bulletin, it’s full of information about what’s going on."
