Member of the Week - Karen Thorburn Photography

KarenThorburn has had a life-long passion for photography, since getting her first camera when she was only six years old. Karen became very passionate about landscape photography after she purchased her first DSLR in 2009, which is when she launched her business as a side line whilst still employed full-time in the renewable energy sector. Karen started doing wedding photography in her spare time in 2016 and have never looked back. Karen became self-employed on a full-time basis in May 2017, focusing on wedding and portrait photography, commercial and events photography, writing, public speaking and landscape photography workshops.

Karen told Inverness Chamber about what its like to be a sole-trader photographer: “I work as a sole trader and am based on the Black Isle near Inverness. My main source of income is wedding photography. I love to capture natural images in my wedding images and give couples real memories to look back on in years to come. I run landscape photography workshops for individuals, couples and small groups on the Black Isle, Skye, Wester Ross and Assynt. I enjoy sharing my passion for landscape photography and helping people to get the most out of their cameras. I also write and give talks about my landscape and wedding photography. Furthermore, I offer a wide range of commercial photography services and have had some really exciting assignments this year for a wide range of clients including the Scottish SPCA, The Big Issue and some local businesses around the Highlands.

Karen told us why she would like to feature as member of the week: “This is a great way to reach out to other Chamber members and help to raise my profile off the back of recent networking events and Highland Spotlight.”

We asked Karen what her business plans are for over the next 12 months: “I plan to build on the success I’ve had in 2018, by taking on more weddings and commercial photography, and running more landscape photography workshops.”

Karen has received a number of positive reviews from her wedding clients which can be found here:

We asked Karen what she values most about her Inverness Chamber membership:  Working as a sole trader can be quite isolating at times. Being a Chamber member is a great way to get out and meet people and network with local businesses.

Karen’s top-tip as a sole trader to maximise your chamber membership would be: “Get to know the Chamber team and attend events on a regular basis to raise your profile.”
