Member of the Week - MacGregor Industrial Supplies

Founded over 30 years ago, MacGregor Industrial Supplies is an independent, family owned business. They began trading in 1985 in Invergordon before relocating to Inverness in 1994. Three years later the business relocated again to Henderson Road, the site of their now Head Office and Showroom. MacGregor Industrial Supplies now spans six branches, Stornoway which opened in 2002, Elgin in 2008, Portree in 2012 and Kirkwall (incorporating Orkney Tool Hire) in 2018. Their sixth branch, located in Aberdeen, is currently under development and due to open in early 2019. The business also opened a dedicated Forest and Groundcare showroom in Inverness in 2004. As of November 2018, MacGregor Industrial Supplies employ over 300 members of staff across the North of Scotland.

We spoke to John MacGregor, Managing Director of MacGregor Industrial Supplies who have supplied products to many businesses across the Highlands and Islands. About being member of the week, John said: “We are extremely proud of what we have achieved over 30 years. Although we are constantly growing and expanding, the service we provide to our customers, trade or non-trade will remain the same and this is a great platform to shout about it.”

For the whole month of December, MacGregor Industrial Supplies are running their annual 12 Deals of Christmas promotion. Alongside their 12 deals there are several mega deals and impulse buys so there is something for everyone. They are also running a competition until the 15th of December where one lucky winner will receive a Teng Fat Bike. Details and T & C’s can be found on their website www.macgregorsupplies.co.uk/12dealsofchristmas.

We asked John about their new products or services: “After acquiring Orkney Tool Hire in April 2017, we launched our purpose-built site in September 2018. The opening of our Kirkwall branch was a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to deliver a great selection of products and services to the Orkney Isles and further enhance our long standing and existing trading relationships.”

Additionally, the company has invested heavily in embroidery and branding machines to support the clothing and branding division and MacGregor Schoolwear which provide uniforms for nurseries and schools across the north. Sales for schoolwear are supported through a rapidly growing dedicated site, http://macgregorschoolwear.co.uk/.

John shared with us their business plans over the next 12 months: “The start of 2019 will be an extremely busy and exciting period for MIS as we have the launch of our sixth branch, and first on the east coast, early in the year but we are also relocating our Forest and Groundcare showroom from its current space on Harbour Road to our Head Office site. As we look to the rest of the year, we want to maintain the momentum and continue to grow and develop. Building relationships with new customers and suppliers from the Grampian and Tayside regions as far down as Dundee. This is an extremely exciting time for us as it presents possibilities for us to reach businesses from the Central Belt that have never heard of this family run business from the Highlands.”

MIS have some fantastic awards to shout about. In September, they were extremely proud to be named Highland Business of the Year, Inverness and Ross-Shire Business of the Year and presented with Developing the Young Workforce Award. John said: “It is a prestigious award and to win it on our first-year entering is a massive achievement. This win certainly would not have been possible without the support and loyalty of our staff and customers.”

John shared with us what MacGregor Industrial Supplies value most about their Inverness Chamber membership: “As a family business, relationships are extremely important to us. As members of the Chamber we can continually network and build relationships with current and potential customers and suppliers across the Highlands and Islands.”

John’s top-tip to fellow Chamber members to maximise their membership would be: “Network as much as possible. Despite digital being on the rise, many people still believe in the power of a handshake. As much as we are moving more towards digital with our marketing and estore, we still like to take the time to build relationships face to face and the Chamber is a great platform to do this.”
