Member of the Week - Safety Zone

Our member of the week, Safety Zone, is a truly local Highlands and Islands health and safety training and consultancy provider.

Accidents and ill health associated with work can lead not just to needless pain and suffering but to huge costs and loss of business continuity – this is why Safety Zone’s services matter.

Ensuring safe and healthy working has to be a key priority for everyone at work and this requires real competence, not just commitment and good intentions. If you are a director, owner, or manager of a business, you will appreciate that you personally need to be competent to lead the management of the business safely. And you will also understand the importance of being systematic in ensuring that your employees and your contractors' staff are also competent when it comes to health and safety.

We spoke to Robin Clark, owner at Safety Zone, on attitudes towards accidents in the workplace: “Thankfully serious accidents are rare, and if you think it won’t happen to you – you’re probably right!  However, if you think it can’t happen to you – you’re probably wrong! And as they say: ‘if you think safety is expensive, try having an accident!’”

Losing key personnel due to injury or Ill-health can have a huge domino effect throughout your business, such as: not meeting those contract deadlines; not having the resources intact if an employee(s) should be affected by an accident or damage to expensive equipment or property. The domino effect doesn’t stop there though, damage to business reputation due to accidents and enforcement action can lead to loss of new or repeat business or loss of new investment, and of course accidents can damage workforce morale and affect productivity.

Serious accidents leading to injury may be rare but minor incidents leading to costly damage are happening much of the time and accident claims invariably mean higher insurance premiums or insurance cover actually being refused.

The way you approach health and safety training speaks volumes about your business, your values and your professionalism. Investing in safety training helps your employees to identify hazards and adopt safe and healthy working practices. It helps to avoid the pain, anguish and financial costs that accidents and ill health cause. It fosters a positive culture of health and safety in which unsafe and unhealthy working are not tolerated. It enables your employees to spot ways to improve health and safety management, and enables you to meet your legal duty to protect the health and safety of your employees and others.
