Member of the Week - Simon Kelman Plumbing & Heating

Simon Kelman Plumbing and Heating Ltd was started in February 2011. Simon decided to go self-employed, bought a van and began doing plumbing and heating jobs for private customers in an around the Inverness area. Simon managed to gain a maintenance contract with the highland and Islands Fire Service and Inverness College building. He also worked with other local construction companies. At this point, Simon hired his first plumber and the company has slowly grown. In 2014, Simon secured their current premises on Harbour Road. Simon Kelman Plumbing & Heating have continued to secure contacts with local building companies and have gradually built up their private customer base and have hired local plumbers and taken on apprentices and have slowly grown to what they have today. Simon Kelman Plumbing & Heating now have a staff of 22, employ 14 plumbers, 3 apprentice plumbers, an operations manager, contracts manager and 3 office staff.

Simon Kelman Plumbing and Heating currently operate three departments; they have a maintenance / small plumbing and heating jobs division, a small works division which entails fitting new boilers, new bathrooms and small buildings and renovation works. Additionally, they have their contracting division which deals with all new build housing and renovation projects.

We spoke to Simon Kelman who told us more about his role in the business: “I am a local trained plumbing and heating engineer who has worked for local companies within Inverness. I have moved from working on my own carrying out the plumbing jobs to now mainly being office based. My role is now to oversee the supervision of the business, develop and network with other local business to secure work and contracts for the business over the next year. I also deal with customers and will carry out quotations and prices for larger contracts.”

Simon Kelman Plumbing and Heating would like to tell you more about their various divisions:

Small Works

We currently carry out all plumbing and heating works from very small jobs like a dripping tap or blocked toilet. We aim to offer our customers a quick response time for urgent or emergency jobs.

Bathroom refurbs

We can carry out full bathroom refurbs with all trades provided by our company. We can offer a no obligation quotation and advise service. We work with local suppliers to provide bathroom ware or can fit bathrooms supplied by the customer.

Boiler servicing and repairs

We currently carry out annual boiler servicing and repairs and are hoping for further expansion on this side of the business. We also provide landlord gas safety certification and also legionella testing.

Boiler replacement

We carry out both Oil and Gas boiler replacements including LPG Gas. We can offer free no obligation quotations for this work and also provide all trades required. We are now in a position to offer finance options on new Worcester Bosch boilers that we supply and fit. These boilers come with a 7 – 10-year guarantee, offering you piece of mind that if your boiler breaks down a Worcester bosch engineer can repair your boiler. Our various finance options allow the customer to pay a monthly payment at a rate they can afford.

Currently we have been working very closely with Springfield properties, WGC Scotland Ltd and O Brien homes of which we have very close relationships with and have large contracts secured with in 2019.

Simon Kelman Plumbing & Heating are members of the Financial Services Authority and have collaborated with Worcester Bosch and Hitachi Finance to be able to offer their customers, including landlords, the opportunity to install a new Worcester boiler with finance (subject to credit checks). The finance packages available range from 2 years interest free or up to 10 years with finance options. These boilers come with a 7 – 10-year guarantee. The finance options are extremely flexible and give the customer the option to pay a deposit and pay up the balance in monthly payments. A great idea for that emergency boiler replacement.

They have also employed an electrician. In 2019, they aim to develop and build this side of the business carrying out electrical work on their current contacts and provide an electrical service to our private customers.

We asked Simon what his business plans are for the next 12 months: “We will continue to develop each of our divisions. We are really aiming to build on our current private customer base and build our maintenance department. We would like to increase the number of customers we aim to continue to improve our customer service.”

Simon told us what he values most about his chamber membership: “We have found our membership to be beneficial. We find the support from the staff at the Chamber and also the other business very helpful and encouraging. We also find the HR services of benefit to us particularly as our staff team grows. We have also found the seminars we have attended very useful and thought provoking.”

Simon’s top-tip for maximising your Chamber membership would be: “We have found attending the events and networking with other local businesses to be most beneficial. Therefore, it is a good idea to keep an eye on the events that the chamber holds and go to as many as possible.”
